How to Transport Your Wedding Dress Safely

Whether you’re taking your wedding dress home from the boutique, traveling to your wedding venue, or flying to a destination wedding, transporting your gown carefully will help keep it looking its best. A little planning can prevent wrinkles, snags, and unnecessary stress before your big day.
Keep your dress inside a breathable garment bag during transportation to protect it from dirt and damage. If you’re traveling by car, hang the garment bag whenever possible using one of the vehicle’s hooks or handles. If hanging isn’t an option, lay the dress flat across the back seat or in the cargo area rather than folding it tightly or placing heavy items on top of it.
If you’re flying, check with your airline ahead of time regarding wedding dress policies. Many airlines allow bridal gowns to be carried on and may even have a closet available on board, though availability varies by aircraft. If a closet isn’t available, carefully fold the dress inside its garment bag following your boutique’s recommendations, and plan to have it steamed after you arrive.
Once you reach your destination, remove your gown from its garment bag as soon as practical and hang it in a safe location to allow any travel wrinkles to relax. Giving yourself a day or two before the wedding provides plenty of time for steaming and any final preparations so your dress is ready for your walk down the aisle.
