How to Store Your Wedding Dress Before the Wedding

Once you’ve found your dream wedding dress, you’ll want to keep it in beautiful condition until your wedding day. Proper storage helps protect your gown from wrinkles, stains, moisture, and damage while preserving all of the intricate details that make it special. Taking a few simple precautions can give you peace of mind as you count down to your wedding.
After bringing your dress home, leave it in the breathable garment bag provided by your bridal boutique. Avoid storing your gown in plastic for long periods, as plastic can trap moisture and potentially cause yellowing over time. Choose a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight, humidity, pets, and strong odors. A spare bedroom or guest room closet is often a better option than an attic, basement, or garage, where temperatures and humidity can fluctuate.
As tempting as it may be, try not to take your dress out frequently to admire it or show it to friends and family. Every time the gown is handled, there’s an increased chance of transferring oils from your hands, creating wrinkles, or accidentally snagging delicate fabrics, lace, or beading. If you do remove it from the garment bag, wash your hands first and handle it gently.
A few weeks before your wedding, check in with your seamstress or wedding professionals about steaming your gown if needed. Proper storage between your final fitting and your wedding day will help ensure your dress looks just as beautiful when you walk down the aisle as it did when you first said “yes.”
