The Power of Clamps

Today we’re talking about something we use all the time in bridal appointments: having your dress clipped vs. unclipped.

When you first step into a gown, it’s really important to remember one thing: most dresses are not going to fit perfectly off the rack. And that’s completely normal!

Let me walk you through what that actually looks like in real life.

Here we have one of our beautiful gowns on a bride. As you can see, the dress isn’t hitting her exactly where we want it to yet. The waistline is sitting a little low, and overall it’s not showing her shape the way it’s meant to. This is where clamps become such a helpful tool.

First, I start by adjusting the shoulders. This helps bring the bodice up so the waistline sits right where it naturally should—on her natural waist. Sometimes this can feel a little funny for the bride, but don’t worry. Your stylist is always there to adjust and guide the fit so you can actually see the dress the way it’s meant to look.

Once the bodice is in place, we can see the waist hitting her in the right spot. That alone already starts to transform the dress and how she feels in it.

Next, I take in the waist using clamps. In this case, the gown is about a size too big, so we gently cinch it in. Sometimes we even need to fold or roll the fabric slightly to give a more accurate idea of how it will fit after alterations.

And just like that, the dress is clipped and shaped to her body. The difference is incredible—she instantly feels more confident and is able to truly picture herself in the gown on her wedding day.

That’s the power of clamps.

They are not something scary. They are not a sign that something is wrong with the dress. In fact, they are one of the most helpful tools we have as stylists. Clamps allow us to show you what alterations will do and help you visualize your final fit so you can make your decision with confidence.

I really hope this helps you understand what clamps are used for during your bridal appointment. They’re simply there to help you see the full potential of your dress.

Always remember: never judge a dress by its hanger—and always trust your stylist.
